The Wisconsin Journalism Education Association is thrilled to announce Eiman Mir as the winner of the 2024 Wisconsin Journalist of the Year. This award recognizes Eiman’s exceptional leadership, dedication to keeping students informed, community outreach and commitment to diversity in journalism.
Eiman Mir, a high school senior at Brookfield East High School, demonstrated an outstanding quality of publication leadership through her role in her school’s newspaper. Judges were particularly impressed with Eiman’s initiative in creating lesson materials, implementing a summer writing workshop and organizing a recruitment trip to a local middle school, fostering excitement about journalism among 8th graders.
The award also highlights Eiman’s ability to delve deep into topics of public health, showcasing exceptional research skills. Her storytelling, characterized by clarity, informativeness and engagement, truly sets her apart. Furthermore, Eiman’s commitment extends beyond traditional print media, as evidenced by her efforts in design.
In recognition of this achievement, Eiman Mir will receive a $1,000 scholarship award, made possible through the MPC Endowment Ltd., a philanthropic affiliate of the Milwaukee Press Club. Additionally, as the state winner, Eiman’s submission will be forwarded to the National High School Journalist of the Year Competition, where they will have the opportunity to compete for a $3,000 scholarship.

The Committee also recognizes Madeline Monthie, a senior at Stoughton High School, as the Finalist for the 2024 Wisconsin Journalist of the Year. Madeline’s superb reporting and writing skills, along with her exceptional leadership within her staff and community engagement, have set her apart in this competition.
Madeline Monthie’s “Madison for Mandela” and “Age of AI” feature stories were highlighted as excellent examples of her ability to gather quality information from various sources and present complex topics clearly and engagingly. Her creation of a Google Feedback Form for readers demonstrates her commitment to audience engagement and feedback.
As the Finalist, Madeline Monthie showcases solid design skills and exceptional leadership abilities. The WisJEA Board of Directors commends Madeline for her professionalism and dedication to addressing real-world topics with a high level of journalistic integrity.
